The Department of Culture, Heritage & Arts holds diverse responsibilities in service to a Fiji where cultural diversity is celebrated and harnessed for sustainable development. As lead implementing agency for Fiji’s National Cultural Policy (2022-2032), our strategy is operationalized through structured policy units, comprehensive outreach programmes and initiatives linking cultural development with economic opportunity.
Originally established as the Culture department in 2000 by Cabinet decision, the department is tasked to coordinate the safeguarding (preservation, protection, and promotion) of Fiji’s rich cultural diversity, its multi-faceted art forms, and its unique heritage. The work of the department aligns with the Green Growth Framework aimed at restoring the balance in development that is sustainable for our collective future.’ (Drawn from FNCP p.8) .
Our diverse role includes protection protocols, community, and grassroots initiatives for enhancement of livelihood; promotion of culture, heritage, and art; implementation mechanisms for ratified culture-related conventions; capacity building for the culture sector; as well as culture statistics and grants disbursement. We also facilitate the participation of women and youth in culture; income generating initiatives; and fostering culture policy and standards for Fiji.’ (Drawn from Fiji National Cultural Policy p.8).
The Department’s dual mandate is rooted in stewardship of cultural identity and socio-economic development, recognizing that a thriving culture is foundational to national pride and economic resiliency.
